A fter several years of studying the Optimist Events around the world, the changes in sailing and the rapid switch into a technological race which in a way put sailors and coaches into a second row seat, Famagusta Nautical Club and Chesva 2.0 are teaming up to put the First Ever Regatta of Champions.
2022 Chesva Regatta of Champions – The R.O.C., is a result of a four year efforts which finally reached the implementation phase. The two partners worked together and put a format of a Regatta that never took place before. An Event that can take place anywhere in the World, in any country and any club using the organizers‘ sponsors and standards. Scheduled within November 2022 the top 35 optimist sailors from around the world will be invited to The R.O.C. Using a formula of difficulty, invitations will be sent out to the top sailors of the World Championship, as well as all the Continental Championships (European, N & S. American, Asian & Oceanian and African). At least 20% of the invitations will go out to Girls. If any Continental Championship is not completed prior to The R.O.C. some invitations will be sent out to eligible sailors from the same Continental, a year ago.
All invitations will be sent out through the National Federations and it will be addressed to specific sailors. If invited sailors cannot make it to the event then the invitation will go to the next sailor in the rankings. In addition, there will be 5 Wild Cards available for sailors to pursuit throughout the 2022 year. One Wild Card will always go to the National Champion of the country hosting the event. The remaining 4 will be either split into 2 Sailing Camps with the top 2 winners of each camp, taking the cards, or by appointing regattas around the world and passing on the cards to the winners. Once the fleet is invited and formed, the actual 1st Regatta of Champions will take place in Limassol Cyprus. The Event will be a week long with 4-5 days of racing and plenty of activities.
The participating sailors and coaches will go after the Trophy of the Champions, but mainly a scholarship prize money purse of €40.000 which will be awarded to the top 12 sailors in the form of scholarships for academic expenses and to the top 3 coaches in the form of awards.
Entry fee will cover registration, accommodation, meals and boat charter and it will be as high as the actual cost. Coach boat/s (one or two) will accommodate all coaches. Optional Individual RIB charter will be though available.
All detailed information will be available through the Notice of Race that will be published not after January 31st 2022, on the official website of the event, www.regattaofchampions.com.
